Salutations, Cloak Dog. The Dropship has continued to go through transformationsGǪ During Beta years, I understand it was a game item that required ENORMOUS hand-to-controller practice hours to get technically good at it. In addition, it needed an ENORMOUS long grind of SP to extend it's cpu/pg to finally reach the point where you could custom fit proto module combinations.
By the time players like myself got hooked on it, the best DS players were already legends, and students like myself barely got to advance to their levels before a large portion of Dropship variants and their modules were taken away from the game. Behind players like me, a door closedGǪ and any chance of new players becoming TECHNICALLY good at driving a DS was arguably "lost", or diverted to whipping around in a ADS (the only surviving variant of Dropship there is in the current game).
This is not meant to be an insult to ADS players when I say, your selections of defensive modules, and your range of manuvering skills are not in the same category as the (pretty much backstaged and neglected) transport players, and in the end arguably not as technically demanding. Or perhaps just not based on anywhere near similar motivations/objectives as the transport playersGǪ.
But the fitting aspect of the Dropship hasn't changed at its core. Cloak, you still must sit with your expensive "blank" ADS, grinding away for a very long time, in order to have the "neural" permission to re-route its power and cpu, and tweak the efficiency on every individual attachment from blaster turret to PG upgrade unit, to rate of recharge of shield and reppers,GǪ. before you can fit the items you are dreaming of fitting. This grind, this ENORMOUS grind, is the only artefact left behind from the days when LOGI dropships were in the game. It's that LONG grind of SP to make a A++ dropship, that keeps a LOT of the new and hotshot ADS players from ever reaching the status of the legendary DS driversGǪ and forces the new 'pilots' to rely on jockeying around the air like moths as their primary (sometimes only) "skill", preventing them from becoming as "technically and tactically" skilled as the players of the past.
But enough tributeGǪ. You WILL have to grind long to fit any cool combination of Advanced modules, to say nothing of Proto modules, on your DS.
The kind of weaponry folks tend to fire most at dropships, are blocked more effectively by Shield energy than by Armour layers, so shields are the DS's better friend. For Caldari dropships, the hardener has a psychological benefit of protection, because many enemy won't try to shoot at you when they see the blue glow around your DSGǪ. where the booster has no way of "scaring" enemy off of you.
Rigging up some powerful door turrets on your Gallente DS is a terrible waste of pg/cpu/SP unless you have a powerful gunner-player you can count on to ride with you. Finding and building a good communicative driver-gunner team can take as long as the cpy/pg rerouting grindGǪ and as I said, I doubt that most of the "new and cocky" ADS players have that kind of commitment or want to spend that LONG a time in order to achieve that "technical skill". If you aren't interested in finding a gunner-buddy to pair with you regularly (and I mean regularly, not just once a month), extra guns and turret grind on your DS is likely to be a waste of your ISK/SP.
Happy Hunting out there, Cloak.
Universe of good wishes for the 49, especially CCP Eterne...
